I actually only got my phone in 1998 and, even then, I’m not sure I could even play Snake on it. I have to admit, I was a very late adopter. What most of us will remember is when they really started spreading in the UK in the 1990s. It was actually between employees at two telecoms companies, testing the idea, so I suppose it’s a very generous definition of the first mobile call. ![]() Susannah Streeter: Well, with difficulty. Sarah Coles: So how did they manage to make a call then? So, of course, they weren’t widely used until much later. If that has come as a surprise to you, it’s probably because mobile phones weren’t actually on sale until ten years later when they cost thousands of dollars.
